You love going to the gym. It keeps you healthy, fit, and strong. But what you probably don’t love is gym smells. That’s right, we’re talking about the stink that can be left behind in your locker, your gym bag, your t-shirts, and more.
You can’t stop yourself from sweating, so what can you do to improve the stink and smell great at the gym? Thankfully, there are essential oils for that.
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are, simply, highly concentrated fragrant essences that come from herbs, flowers, fruits and more plants. Essential oils have a wide range of uses, in everything from aromatherapy and massage therapy to food flavorings to perfume.
While essential oils have gained popularity recently to support a general sense of well-being, one of their first applications was in aromatherapy. In aromatherapy, essential oils are diluted in water and diffused into the air. Breathing in different essential oils may stimulate the parts of the brain that affect physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
But there’s another reason that essential oils are used in aromatherapy: they smell amazing.
How to Smell Great at the Gym With Essential Oils
First, you’ll want to choose your essential oil (or oils). This can be completely based on your preference: whatever smells good to you. If you want a fresh, clean smell, some essential oils you might consider include:
If you prefer more of a sharp earthy, woodsy smell, some oils you might pick up include:
- Clary sage
- White fir
Here’s an idea of some of the many blends you could make to take care of the stink in your locker or gym bag:
- Soothing (if you like to feel calm after an invigorating workout): lavender + chamomile + ylang ylang + clary sage
- Citrus Burst (for a bright, cheery freshness): lemon + sweet orange + bergamot
- Fresh and Clean (for a clean blank slate): peppermint + lavender + lemon
- Floral (if you like feeling pampered after a workout): geranium + ylang ylang + lavendar
- Woodsy (if you prefer masculine scents after a trip to the gym): cypress + cedarwood + white fir
- Rainforest (for a fun change of pace): cypress + lavender + eucalyptus + cedarwood
Once you’ve chosen your oils (or oil combinations), you’ll need to create a spray.
How to Make an Essential Oil Spray
You will need:
- One spray bottle
- 1 cup of distilled water
- 1 tbsp baking soda
- One funnel
- 30 drops of an essential oil or blend of oils
Use the funnel to pour the water into your spray bottle. Next, carefully add 30 drops of your chosen essential oil or oils. Add the tbsp of baking soda. Close the bottle and shake well. Then spray in your bag, on your clothes, or in your locker to freshen things up!
How to Get Rid of Shoe Odor
Another side effect of going to the gym … you end up with stinky shoes. Here’s a blend that may help eliminate that stink.
- 4 ounce spray bottle
- 2 ounce distilled water
- 2 ounce witch hazel
- 8 drops tea tree essential oil
- 8 drops peppermint essential oil
- 8 drops lavender essential oil
Witch hazel is an astringent that has antifungal, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties — exactly what you want in your shoe. The essential oil blend creates a bright, fresh smell.
Pour water and witch hazel into a small bottle (using a funnel if necessary). Add the essential oils. Swirl or shake to combine ingredients. Spray into your shoes until they are slightly damp, and allow them to dry. Repeat each night (or as needed).
